The soundproof telephone booth in the office is not just a decoration
The hustle and bustle of an open office area is probably something that every professional in the workplace cannot avoid in their daily lives. The sound of keyboard keystrokes, the incessant ringing of phone calls, and the heated debates in group discussions interweave into an impenetrable network of sounds. And when you need to make a truly important phone call, this network becomes an invisible pressure.

In the past, my only choice was to hide in the stairwell of the fire escape. Is it quiet there? On the contrary. The spacious hallway is like a huge resonance box, amplifying the sounds of footsteps, door pushes, and even whispers from upstairs and downstairs into eerie reverberations. The most embarrassing thing is that one hand has to hold the microphone and try to hear what the other person is saying, while the other hand has to block one’s own ears to filter out noise, and always be alert to whether colleagues will suddenly break in. If you’re unlucky, the voice controlled light above your head will go out halfway, leaving only your awkward voice echoing in the darkness. After a phone call, my voice became hoarse, my thoughts were interrupted, and the dignity of a professional was also thrown onto the cold steps.
So, when I first saw the glass telephone booth standing in the corner of the company, like many others, I thought it was just another beautiful decoration.

Until that time, an important client suddenly requested a video communication to modify the plan, and all the meeting rooms were already occupied. With no way out, I pushed open the glass door with the mentality of being a living horse doctor instead of a dead horse. At the moment when the door gently closes behind me, the world feels like someone has pressed the mute button. The buzzing of the air conditioner, the laughter of colleagues, and the operation of the printer, all sounds are isolated from the outside. The soft lights inside the pavilion automatically turn on, and the small table board just fits the computer. The charging socket is right beside me.
That call, in this acoustic telephone booth, I sat up straight and no longer had to bow back and speak softly, nor did I have to struggle to distinguish the other person’s words. I explained the plan clearly, and the other party heard it clearly. There is no reverberation in the stairwell, no gazes from passersby, only professionalism and composure.
When I walked out of the privacy phone booth, I completely changed my mind. It is not a decoration, but a dignified shelter in the noisy office, the last line of defense for efficient work.

In today’s workplace, we are used to staying focused in the midst of noise, but we overlook that quietness itself is a luxury resource. Soundproof telephone booths not only safeguard the quality of a call, but also the confidence and dignity that should not be consumed by professionals. Next time there is an important phone call, please stride into that small space, return the quietness to yourself, and return the professionalism to the conversation.
